WHO WE ARE
& WHAT WE DO

We manage forestlands for the Redwood Forest Foundation

The Usal Redwood Forest Company is a wholly owned subsidiary of  the Redwood Forest Foundation, Inc. (RFFI), a private non-profit, Section 501(c)(3) organization, dedicated to economy, ecology, and social equity in the Redwood Region. As a subsidiary corporation, URFC shares the vision and mission of it’s parent organization.

OUR VISION

To establish community-based forests that provide both critical habitat for increased biodiversity and improved regional economic vitality.

OUR MISSION

To acquire, protect, restore and manage Redwood Forest Foundation’s forestlands and other related resources in the Redwood Region for the long-term benefit of the communities located there.

OUR HISTORY

The Usal Redwood Forest (Usal) is an almost 50,000 acre redwood forest located in the northwestern corner of Mendocino county on California’s Lost Coast. The landscape is almost twice as large as the city of San Francisco. Once a thriving ancient redwood and Douglas fir forest, over-harvesting in the 1970s, 1980s and earlier, left the Usal Redwood Forest dominated by second-growth Douglas fir and tanoak with redwood struggling to survive. The Redwood Forest Foundation is restoring the forest, planting redwoods and using sustainable harvesting practices that promote biodiversity, enhance carbon storage, and support local economies.
